The Kingston SE Triathlon was held yesterday, Sunday 14 February, under the most perfect South Australian weather… well maybe it was a bit windy on some of the cycle portion but otherwise, near perfection. Three hundred and five athletes including thirty seven “7 to 11 Years Old” lined up in four events ranging from the Olympic Course (or Long Course), the Short Course, the Come n’ Tri and the 7 to 11 Years Old. This is a record number of participants for the triathlon surpassing by almost 40 last year’s participation and representing six states. Kingston hosted not only the State Championships but was also a qualifier for the ITU World Championship, which will be held in Budapest Hungary in September.
The day began under a bit of cloud which dissipated by the time of the Olympic Distance at 8:24am. Four waves sent off including 58 in the Males Age Group, which was the largest of the day. With water temperatures of 19.1C, wetsuits were optional for all athletes. The waters were also very calm. The winds played a bit of havoc on the cycling portion and some reported slower times on Pinks Beach Road where the wind’s full effects were felt. Fortunately, Ambulance SA reported no serious injuries.
Matt White defended his state championship title in the Open Males in a time of 1:53.51 followed less than 4 minutes later by Shane Johnson of Tusmore SA in 1:57:43. Both have competed several times in Kingston and thoroughly enjoyed the event. Coming up a few seconds later in 3rd place with a time of 1:59:18 was Chris Wigell of Aberfoyle Park SA. In the Females Open, the Kosztovits twins of Trott Park SA took the two top spots with Maria in 2:10:41 and Edith in 2:13:12. Rounding up the third position was Ella Holmes of Evanston Park SA with a time of 2:15:12. Team Nurofen, most likely an appropriate name, got top honours in the Males with a time of 2:32:37 while Murray Nank BT was the fastest mixed team in 2:38:40.
In the Short Course – Open Females, Jackie Greed of Hamilton VIC won her age division of 30 – 39 and 1 st place in a time of 52:20 followed one second later by Rachael Sullivan. Rounding out 3rd spot was Gabrielle Lanman in a time of 52:47 leaving 27 seconds between 1st and 3rd place. Gabrielle also won her age division of 20-29. In the Open Males, the top spot went in a time of 45:37 to Jacob Otto of Loxton SA and 2nd place was to Stephen Jolley of Mount Gambier with a time of 50:43. 3rd place was clinched by Mark Franz in 51:45. Several teams were in the melee: the Allsorts (Males 44:55), the Lacepede Ladies (Females 1:02:40), the Still Dreaming (Mixed 54::05), the Bordertown High School 1 (School 45:06) and the Cape Jaffa Wines (Local Team 1:01:02).
The Come n’ Tri event drew many participants with Leandra Davies and Sheree Brown taking 1st and 2nd positions respectively in the Females Division. Sheree’s son Jacob took 1st place followed closely by Peter Ham. Sheree and Jacob were also the top locals. The four top divisional teams were JSW (Male Team), Dynamic C’s (Female Team), Have a Go (Mixed Team) and Girl Power 3 (Local Team).
The Little’s BP Kingston SE Triathlon thanks all its numerous volunteers without whom, the event would simply not occur and of course, its numerous sponsors.
